Common Bond

The common bond is the element which binds every member of a credit union together e.g. those living or working in the Swords area of Dublin may join Swords & District Credit Union. This defined field of membership is the glue that binds the members together. It is essentially people “doing it for themselves” and demonstrates effectively how a credit union is a credit Co-operative with members working together to achieve a better life for themselves.

The criteria for having a common bond are not necessarily geographical although most credit unions in Ireland are community focussed. It is possible to have a common bond if you are in a particular occupation like a Garda e.g. a Garda Credit Union or a teacher e.g. the ASTI Credit Union.

Swords Credit Union’s Common Bond is based on geographic location and is detailed on our map.
